I’ve been really diving deep into the world-building of a custom D&D campaign that started with a pair of one-shot adventures; “The Beast of Whitwick” and “Harran’s Tower” which were both tuned by myself to add a bit more content. The party are mostly tabletop RPG veterans with decades of experience, so those two adventures were both trivial in terms of combat. I decided to go with something entirely custom for the next adventure, which was originally supposed to be a Halloween one-shot based on a game of hide-and-seek. As it turned out, the mechanics of 5th Edition D&D don’t lend well to a game of chase, so I had to spend some time thinking about how I want to make that concept work. Eventually, I decided to promote the running by making the opponent impossibly strong. The party could never hope to face down this opponent and win in combat. It’s also not fun for the party if it destroys them too easily, so I created a group of NPC adventurers to join in the mission to slay this juggernaut. The NPCs are higher level than the players and can serve as cannon fodder if I need to kill off a hero, so the impossible monster can demonstrate its strength but the players don’t need to reroll characters.
More to come.
